American college in Cyprus…
I’m a student of American college. As far as I knew, almost colleges have aim of trade that as if we [students] are goods. In their advertisment, they’ve advertised that Cyprus is the best place for hotel managent or let’s say for the study. And they’ve lied that all subjects are accredited and internship from college, students will be paid 6 Eu/hr, but when I came in Cyprus,I got absolutely opposite. Here is no chance for Asian,African or any third country students’ for jobs legally.Even in summer time, we are hardly allowed to work and jobs have been made limited for the subjects. For an exemple, hotel managent in hotel, culinary arts in restaurant. And another subjects such as TRAVEL AND TOURISM,BBA,Mba,COMPUTER SCIENCE they are not allowed to work legally in Cyprus.Even if you have work permit letter from labour ministry they’ll object you, because they want us to leave this country anyhow.
So any one who wants to come in cyprus as a student I suggest you that never come here, if you want to come here that means you are destroying your future..better to try another country except Cyprus..

“Oh my God. He is a bastard. When [the employment agent] met me at the airport, I thought it was their culture, I thought it was their tradition to make hug. As the days go on, I realize it’s not their own way of entertaining you. There’s something very malicious in it, because he was asking for sex.”

“Not only Filipinos, but most of the [housemaids] here, have a lot of problems with their employers here, that’s why some make runaway. The contract is only for 7 hours, but they want us to work 16 hours or more. You can count on your fingers the number of employers who treat [housemaids] nicely. We came to Cyprus to work, not to kill ourselves. We wanted to be treated as human beings, not animals made to work.”

“You go [to the police] only in fighting. Nothing will happen. Even the police, even the immigration…everyone knows nobody follows the contract. There’s laws but they don’t follow it…. So some run away and go in hiding, work part time and can earn more than my monthly salary.”

“It’s very hard [in the Philippines]. We need to survive. The salary here, is…not bad. But we work more than 16 hours [a day], 6 days a week, so then the pay is not so good…. We cannot save. Especially because my husband cannot work because had operations for hemorrhoid in [his] brain….. I earn 311 [euros] a month….Not all of us are earning the same. Some earn 293 only. We’re trying hard because we need also. Because our children are going to school. Not only for school, but everyday to eat, for the house.”
